How a memoir went from kitchen-table draft to bestseller list

When Renaud Côté approached us with a handwritten memoir about growing up in rural Quebec, we paired him with a developmental editor who specializes in narrative non-fiction. After three rounds of editing, custom cover illustration, and a targeted launch campaign, his book reached the top 20 in Canadian memoir on Amazon within its first month. The entire process took five months from first consultation to publication day.

Editorial note

Why developmental editing matters more than you think

Many authors skip straight to copy editing, but structural issues — pacing problems, underdeveloped characters, unclear thesis — cannot be fixed at the sentence level. A developmental edit examines the architecture of your book. It asks whether each chapter earns its place, whether the opening hooks the reader, and whether the ending delivers on the promise of the premise. At BookBountyz, developmental editing is our most requested service because it transforms manuscripts that feel "almost there" into books that genuinely work.

Quick tip

Choosing the right trim size

Trim size affects readability, printing cost, and shelf presence. For fiction, 5.5 × 8.5 inches is the most popular choice in North America. Non-fiction and self-help titles often benefit from a slightly larger 6 × 9 format. Children's picture books have their own standards entirely. Our production team advises on trim size as part of every design pathway.

Nadia Ferhani on writing her first novel at 58

"I always told myself I would write a book one day. BookBountyz made 'one day' happen. The ghostwriting collaboration was seamless — they captured my voice perfectly and guided me through every decision from cover art to distribution channels."

Common questions before getting started

How much does a typical book project cost?
Costs vary widely depending on the scope. A standalone copy edit for a 70,000-word novel typically starts around $1,800 CAD. A full-service pathway — developmental editing, design, and distribution setup — ranges from $4,500 to $9,000. Ghostwriting projects are quoted individually based on length and research requirements. We provide a detailed estimate after your free consultation.
Do I retain full rights to my book?
Absolutely. You retain 100% of the intellectual property rights to your manuscript, cover design files, and all derivative materials. Our role is service-based — we never claim ownership or royalty shares. This is clearly outlined in every project agreement.
Can you help with French-language or bilingual books?
Yes. Based in Sherbrooke, Quebec, our team includes native French-speaking editors and designers. We handle fully French manuscripts as well as bilingual editions. Translation services are available through our partner network for authors who want to publish in both official languages.
What happens during the free consultation?
We schedule a 30-minute video or phone call to discuss your project. You will share your manuscript stage, goals, and timeline. We will recommend a service pathway, provide a ballpark estimate, and answer any questions. There is no obligation — the consultation is genuinely free and designed to help you make an informed decision.
